DETAILS

Artist development is vital to the health of our industry. As this function is cut to the bone at most labels, the artist development executive’s role becomes even more important to help shape and guide talent from the studio to the marketplace.

In this NARIP session, you will discover the magic and the mystery of artist development, who’s getting signed (and who’s not), choosing the right producer, getting the attention of producers and A&R execs, signing with a major or indie, and more.

Get an insider’s peek at the economic and artistic realities of the fastest-changing, hottest business in the world and don’t miss this intimate, unique and interactive learning experience.

TO BE DISCUSSED

  • What styles of music work best for majors and indies
  • Scouting for a record company – established connections, industry impact, staff, distribution, resources and strategies that have taken years to assemble (this is quite an advantage).
  • When and when NOT to sign and why.
  • Kinds of artists NOT getting signed.
  • The importance of touring to developing artists. Most labels WILL NOT SIGN a non-touring artist.
  • How corporate changes affect who gets signed, released and marketed.
  • The process: from discovery to record release (today a much shorter process).
  • Making the right record: selecting producers and the rest of the team.
  • The future of A&R and artist development. If you look at history, the process is strikingly similar with the exception of company investment and patience. The artist always made an impact, and the A&R department was influenced by that impact.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

James Barber

James Barber got into the music business when he randomly tagged along with his roommate to the orientation meeting at the college radio station. Two months later, he was music director. Since then, he’s made $$$ as an independent radio promoter, tour manager, music publisher, indie label production coordinator, band manager, major label A&R guy, rock critic, reissue/catalog manager, record producer and freelance consultant/spiritual leader. Career highlights include managing Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ during the “Straight to Hell”/“Fly Me Courageous” years, doing A&R at Geffen/DGC during the ‘90s and producing Ryan Adams. Only some of that stuff on the Internet is true.

Sean “Jo Blo” Johnson, Blo Entertainment

Sean “Jo Blo” Johnson is an entertainment manger specializing in music. He manages and consults artists, producers, songwriters, DJs and actors. Blo Entertainment has a digital distribution partnership with Ingrooves / Fontana. Select clients (past and present) include Outkast, Ying Yang Twins, producers Organized Noize, Producer Isaac Hayes III, Goodie Mob, writer Rob A, actor and radio show host Braxton Cosby and actor / radio show host Staci Jae Johnson and others. He has worked in the music business in Atlanta for 20+ years.

Steve Jones, Brash Music

Steve is a music lifer. He joined the school orchestra in the 4th grade, and then in the 7th grade sold his sax, bought a guitar and has been rockin’ ever since. Steve played in a band called “The Jades” (is that 60’s enough for you) during high school. Two years of radio followed seven years of college. Then, after a stint producing the weekly syndicated radio show “Rock ‘N Roll Roots”, it was time to go to work for a major label. 1978 saw the start of a 26 year run with Atlantic Records. The first 10 years were in radio promotion, where he worked with The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Chic, U2, INXS, Bette Midler, Genesis, Foreigner, The Spinners, Yes, Laura Branigan, Debbie Gibson and some others he’s forgotten about. Then in 1988, he moved over to the marketing/sales side of Atlantic and was instrumental in the development of the careers of Hootie & The Blowfish, Edwin McCain, Seven Mary Three, Matchbox Twenty, Collective Soul and Tori Amos, among others. 2004 brought on another WMG “downsizing” and Steve became the one Atlantic
let get away. He saw this as an opportunity to join the fine folks at
Brash Music on their path of re-thinking the music business. In his
role as CEO of Brash, he has aided in the development of the careers of Anthony David, Aaron Shust and Gungor. Steve is a Visiting Instructor in the School of Music at Georgia State University and also sits on the Board of Governors for the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy.
