ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Shawn R. Nolan, Esq.
In the early 90s after attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and spending time in the trenches of college radio and local record labels, Shawn began his career in the music industry as the manager for the seminal indie rock band Archers of Loaf. In the late 90s Shawn was employed by Mammoth Records, a joint venture with Buena Vista Music Group, in the A&R department and as the Director of Film/TV licensing. In 2000 he moved to Seattle to take the position of VP of International Marketing & Distribution and Creative Director of Film / TV licensing at Sub Pop Records. There he had the pleasure of working directly with acts such as the Shins, Iron & Wine, Postal Service, Low, Mudhoney, The Constantines and Fruit Bats. While in Seattle he served on the Grammy Association Pacific NW Board of Governors and founded the Musicians Resource Center – an organization whose purpose was to educate musicians and other music industry hopefuls in the customs and practices of various areas of the music industry through the bi-monthly presentation of panel discussions led by national experts.
Shawn moved back to the Southeast in 2005 to attend law school at Georgia State University College of Law where he excelled in Intellectual Property law. While in law school, Shawn clerked at Jonathan E. Leonard, P.C., a firm that represents pop and urban artists, producers, writers, publishing companies and record labels. Shawn’s law practice focuses primarily on representation of writers, publishers, record labels, recording artists and other entertainment based companies. Some of Shawn’s clients include MERGE Records, Metz, The AV Club, Kill the Noise, EMA, Basia Bulat, Crooked Fingers, Mount Moriah and Lost in the Trees. He lives in Atlanta, GA with his wife, Laura, and their two children, Watts and Andie.
Scott Sanders, Esq.
Scott is a graduate of Emory University and University of Tennessee School of Law. After graduation he clerked for Judge E. A. Wright, Senior Judge, Fulton County Civil Court (now Fulton County State Court). For over thirty years he has practiced in Atlanta with his law practice limited to entertainment law in all areas of the entertainment industry [with emphasis on recording artists, producers, songwriters, music publishers, personal managers, authors and independent label representation] regarding contract negotiations, licensing, copyrights, trademarks and related entertainment and intellectual property litigation. Scott has been an Adjunct Professor at Emory University School of Law teaching Entertainment Law from 1993 to the present; a founding member & past Chairman of the Entertainment & Sports Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia; legal counsel for various arts groups including Friends of Georgia Music Festival, Inc. (sponsoring the Georgia Music Hall of Fame® and the annual GEORGY® awards); and a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (GRAMMY® awards). He has been a frequent speaker at national and regional seminars including “Counseling Clients in the Entertainment Industries” sponsored by the Practicing Law Institute in New York; the International Folk Alliance Convention; various legal panels at SXSW in Austin TX; and the annual Southeastern Entertainment Law Symposium – an “out-of-the-country” seminar each November [which Scott initiated and developed in 1989 as Chairman of the Entertainment & Sports Law Section – State Bar of Georgia]. Scott is co-author of the 5th Edition of the leading entertainment law textbook “Law and Business of the Entertainment Industries” (by Biederman, Pierson, Silfen, Glasser, Abdo & Sanders) published by Praeger Publishers.
Representative clients include The Producers, The Swimming Pool Q’s, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Arrested Development, Jagged Edge, D4L, etc. Representative litigation includes Scott being selected as the mediator in the case of The Allman Brothers Band vs. Capricorn Records/Polygram; and other high profile cases involving The Black Crowes (the “pie-chart” case televised live on Court TV); the Sugarland partnership dispute; Larry Blackmon (CAMEO) vs. producer Swizz Beatz; cases involving Lowery Music Publishing; and the successful defense of the hip-hop group “D4L” and Warner Music/Atlantic Records in a copyright infringement case finally affirmed in the 11th Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals.
Julie Kessler

Julie Kessler is a graduate of Emory University School of Law with a Juris Doctor and a certificate in Transactional Law and Skills. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Music and Philosophy. Julie has worked with ASCAP, at The Coca-Cola Company and with several solo practitioners. She was also on the executive board for Emory’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society. She is an active member of the planning committee for the Atlanta Bar’s annual LawJam and a member of the American Bar Association and State Bar of Georgia Sports and Entertainment Law societies. Julie has played alto saxophone for over 15 years and works at the Georgia Theatre, a famous music venue in Athens, Georgia. She looks forward to practicing law to support artists and creatives in the advancement of their careers, and to ensure that their works are respected and protected.
