Steve Lurie

 

Executive Director, NARIP New York Chapter

Stephen Lurie is Executive Director of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals New York chapter. He is also founder and president of Music Without Borders, LLC, a music business solutions company consulting with record labels, talented recording artists, music retailers, libraries, music supervisors and directors of film and television. With over 20 years experience in the music industry and one of the largest private music collections in the country, his expertise and encyclopedic knowledge of music and recordings have helped him create a niche as a sought-after specialist.

Mr. Lurie has worked in the music business as a retailer, wholesaler, performer, professor, producer, concert promoter and music columnist. As VP and co-owner of Al Franklin’s Musical World in Greenwich, Connecticut, he helped build this taste-maker business into one of the finest and most highly-regarded record and audio stores in the country. With an acute awareness of consumer preferences and an innate sense of what makes a hit, he helped break dozens of new artists in a key music market.

From 2003 until of 2005. Lurie was Music Director of Satalla, a 200-seat venue in Manhattan that produced over 1,500 shows by world music, singer-songwriters, folk, jazz and blues musicians. In 2004 Conde Nast Traveler Magazine picked Satalla as one of the “50 Hot Spots for the World.” Lurie continues to produce shows in NYC at Symphony Space, The Bottom Line, The Bitter End, Makor, SOBs, The Cutting Room and the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. In 2006 he became co-producer of the New York City Blues Cruise.

In 2000 Mr. Lurie developed the Music Business Certificate for New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies where he teaches “How to Start a Record Label.” From 1998-2004 he was on the faculty of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music where he taught in the Music Management Program. He consulted The New School University in Manhattan where he developed music business programs for graduate and undergraduate students.

Mr. Lurie wrote a popular music column for The Greenwich Times newspaper and has contributed articles to Rhythm Music Magazine and Percussive Notes Magazine. He has been interviewed on television and radio on industry trends as well in The New York Times, The Greenwich Times, Greenwich Post, The Stamford Advocate, and The NAPRA Review (New Alternatives for Publishers, Retailers & Artists) and in other news media.

Mr. Lurie has helped to choose the music for the world’s foremost figure skaters including Katarina Witt, Yuka Sato, Brian Boitano, Ekatarina Gordeeva, Tara Lapinski and Oksana Baul among many others.

Mr. Lurie is an active member of various national music industry organizations including The National Music Honor Society, The Recording Academy where he is a voting member for The Grammys, National Association of Music Merchandisers (NARM), Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) and The Film Music Network (FMN).

Mr. Lurie has lectured on music industry issues throughout the US, Canada and Europe. In 1998, he was invited to deliver the keynote at WOMEX (Worldwide Music Expo) in Stockholm, Sweden on the topic of record retail in the United States. In May of 2002, he was a featured speaker at The Book Expo in New York City. In February of 2005 he presented several lectures at the Folk Alliance/Strictly Mundial Convention in Montreal. In January of 2006 he presented a lecture on independent retail and distribution at MIDEM in Cannes, France. Recently, Lurie was asked to be a Grant Reviewer for the Connecticut Department of Culture and Tourism, an honor that is bestowed only upon the most distinguished members of the arts community.

As a performer, Lurie has played with orchestras, pop, jazz and world music ensembles in North America, Europe and Asia. He received a BM in Percussion Performance and Music Management (double major) at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford and his MM in World Music Performance and Research from the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Northern Illinois University.
