WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR PITCH SESSION
PREPARATION IS KEY
NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people. About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).
If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog. Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!
BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
- NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event. We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event. In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
- Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker. These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
- You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
- You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
- You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
- NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
- NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
- If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
- If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG
NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 1,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest.
OVER 1,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed well over 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions. Other benefits include new publishing deals for NARIP members, creative collaborations and co-writes, strategic introductions to other music supervisors and placement experts, new representation for composers and much more.
NARIP’S BIGGEST PLACEMENT TO DATE : VODAFONE
Click here to read about NARIP’s biggest placement to date in a Vodafone campaign (Oct 2014) that paid handsomely and launched a career. Other brand placements include McDonalds and AT&T ads, among others.
Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

House Concerts & Alternate Performance Venues: More Fans, More Fun, More Money
×

Wed Oct 17 in Atlanta
The world is a stage said Shakespeare, and today more so than ever with many spaces being converted into performance venues. These include homes, art galleries, shopping malls, retirement homes, subway stations and prisons.
Many have discovered the power and intimacy of house concerts, surpassing club shows in every way: more fun, more profitable and more new fans. Fans are thrilled to learn they can bring the fun (and favorite artists) to their homes.
In marketing, nothing holds more weight than a personal recommendation. And so when a house concert host handpicks a guest list of his own personal friends and then gives an artist the ultimate recommendation in front of them – a group of highly targeted potential fans – that’s valuable. House concerts can be billed as networking events the host and existing fans hold to introduce you and your music to THEIR friends.
Likewise, art galleries create a beautiful alternate environment, and many artists have created meaningful engagement performing at malls, retirement homes and prisons.
Join NARIP and special guests at this program to learn how to plan and execute a successful house concert and alternate venues tour.
YOU WILL LEARN
- For whom can house concerts or alternate venues work?
- Benefits: direct-to-fan, hyperlocalism, growing superfans
- Elements of a successful house concert
- Finding the right host, helping host plan successful house concert
- The space: do’s and don’ts, how to focus audience, maximize intimacy and connectivity
- The guests
- Set-up and flow: how to pace the evening
- Donations: how to work with host for financially successful event

Juliett Rowe, Head of Marketing & Promotion, Blood Drunk Records; Founder, Atlanta Record Label Fest; NARIP Board Member
Juliett Rowe has spent her career working with indie and DIY musicians, whether writing about unknown artists for print, helping artists make strategic decisions regarding their art, or taking late night calls to offer words of encouragement. In 2013, she became head of marketing and promotions for Atlanta indie record label Blood Drunk Records. With ten bands on its roster in various stages of recording and touring, Juliett developed album release plans, secured tour press, and elevated the label to become one of the strongest indie record labels in Atlanta. She realized that many people in the DIY music scene often went unnoticed and unrecognized for their hard work supporting artists, causing her to create the Atlanta Record Label Fest in 2015. The event showcases people behind the scenes and serves indie record labels by creating an opportunity for networking and building community. It also serves fans with cutting-edge musical artists, bridging gaps between genres and sub-cultures. Its first year, the Atlanta Record Label Fest drew hundreds of people and brought together record labels and music fans. The second year (2016) saw the event expanded to two days and included indie record labels from across the state of Georgia. In 2017 Juliett expanded her artist management and consulting business for independent and DIY artists with Panther Creek Artist Management. She also started working with Atlanta independent record label Madison Records (Orchard/Sony) on digital marketing and project management initiatives. Juliett has combined her love of music and technology as a Co-Founder and Head of Client Relationships and Marketing with Bandskor, which is building a dashboard to help talent buyers manage and analyze band submissions. Juliett is active not only in the Atlanta music scene, but also with organizations like National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP.com) and the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy. She understands the need for education, networking, and supporting fellow friends and artists. You can often find her at a show, or hanging out with bands waxing poetic on the value of having a Web site and an email list.

A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents
Is your music getting to decision-makers – people who can say YES and write a check?
The Synch Agents* featured in NARIP Pitch Sessions are among the top sales and marketing executives who actively place music owned by songwriters, composers and independent music publishers.
Many music buyers – directors, producers and music supervisors – name these Synch Agents as among their go-to music providers. These Agents, who NARIP has researched and interviewed, have placed thousands of songs in blockbuster films, hit television shows, trailers, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and video games.
At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch Synch Agents for current placement opportunities and representation, and get immediate feedback.
Come meet these career-makers.
BACKGROUND
Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and trailers for NARIP members.
NARIP members have also secured publishing deals and formed creative collaborations too numerous to mention as a direct result of these NARIP’s Sessions.
Topics
- Access multiple potential buyers and placements
- Trends in synch licensing and agent deals
- Exclusive, non-exclusive, single-song deals
- Budgets and fee ranges
- Royalties, copyright ownership, rights retention
- Fees and deal points between synch agents and their clients
- Which synch agents seek a transfer of copyright(s) for their services, and under what circumstances
- Song re-titling
Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants. At hundreds of NARIP Sessions, we asked every guest music supervisor how to better market music to them. Their one consistent piece of advice? Get representation!
At NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the synch agents and they to get to know you.
Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for possible representation and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.
* Synch Agent: A synchronization or “synch” agent represents music copyrights – either the composition, the sound recordings, or both. They pitch music to buyers and their representatives, including to music supervisors. Synch agents are typically compensated on a commission basis and do not own or control the copyrights they represent. While synch agents usually focus on entertainment and media exploitations, traditional songplugger services also include placement of represented songs with recording artists.

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!
A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents
SIGNED! Seven NARIP Members Get Synch Rep Deals
Topics
WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:
PREPARATION IS KEY
As with NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions, NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people. About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Session.
If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the guest, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog. Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Synch Agent Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs.
In addition to pitching for current placement opportunities, NARIP’s guest Synch Agents will consider music pitched for representation.
Good luck and see you there!
BEFORE NARIP’S SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:
- NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.

FREE NARIP Webinar – ABCs of a Great Stage Show

PLUS 10 FREE Ways To Improve It
Thu Jun 21 at 1:00 pm PST

What exactly about an artist’s live show makes his fans want to pay a ticket charge, bar minimum and/or cover, and drive across town in traffic rather than just stream his music again?
Emmy-Nominated Creative Director Jonathan Tessero – who has directed from Broadway to Beyonce, from Super Bowl to global brand events – answers this question and others.
Join this special program to hear his top ten tips and strategies to make every live show one that will engage the audience, create more fans and make it an event to remember. Best of all, these tips require no expenditure.
TOPICS
- Coordinate: Choreography and costumes or even a lighting rig aren’t necessary to present a strong visual identity.
- Camaraderie & Chemistry: While they should NEVER tell it during a show, all bands have a story. An artist should create short running jokes based on his history and help his audiences see his (or the band’s) personalities. Remember, chemistry is part of a great show!
- Be Creative: Re-imagining your own songs in new and interesting way is a great start to giving your audience an experience.
- Covers: Covers are a great way to bring a new element to original music. Even just a well-placed chorus of a beloved classic into an
original song is a great way to help an audiences feel more familiar with an artist’s show.
- Coach: Are audiences used to seeing the artist in a bar? At a standing concert venue? Or at a seated theater? Remember that as
formats change, an audience isn’t always sure of the rules. Help them! If you want them to stand and dance, encourage them to do so.
- Click Track: Not just a great thing to get into the habit of using during practice, a well-programmed click track will also help maintain a show’s flow and keep the dead air between songs to a minimum.
ALSO
- 5 things to avoid during a LIVE performance
These tips and others will be discussed in detail by our special guest.

“ONE OF THE BEST OPPORTUNITIES TO NETWORK” IN THE BIZ (Music Connection Magazine)
“NARIP brunches have been a HUGE benefit for me and my company,” says Geodesic Management’s Dan Strader from New York. “In just a few hours at a Los Angeles brunch, I was able to establish a presence in that city and make solid connections that I still use to this day. Networking brunches have now begun in New York, and the connections we’ve made are career-changing.”
WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP BRUNCH
For over 25 years NARIP (and its previous incarnation, the Los Angeles Music Network) have hosted brunches to enable record and music industry professionals to mix and mingle in a comfortable setting with a bit of food. For some time had NARIP Brunches in restaurants but found private spaces to be more comfortable and welcoming. When an individual or organization hosts a brunch, NARIP requests that basic food and drink items be available, and the rest is up to their discretion and budget.

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!
A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents
Topics
- Access multiple potential buyer placemente
What is a Synch Agent (and WHY you need one)? View video (:60 seconds)
NARIP Session participants have placed over 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions.
ABOUT STEVEN SCHARF
Steven Scharf Entertainment was formed in 1991 to manage and develop the careers of independent record producers and recording artists. At that time, Steven aligned himself in a joint partnership with Freddy and Caroline Bienstock of Carlin America, Inc. – one of the most prestigious independent music publishers in the world where he served as Senior V.P. Creative for Carlin America, overseeing the licensing of well established songwriters and artists such as AC/DC, Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf), The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Turtles, James Brown, Bobby Darin, and Billie Holiday.
Prior to the creation of Steven Scharf Entertainment, Steven Scharf spent nearly 30 years working in the recording industry as a record producer, head of A&R, and talent manager. His career began in 1969, when he was privileged to apprentice at the famed Muscle Shoals studio in Sheffield. Alabama. While there he worked with legendary artists as The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Lynyrd Skynyrd, R.B. Greaves, and with such producers and engineers as Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Steve Smith.
As his career progressed, Steve moved on to work at GSF Records in the early 70’s and held a staff editorial position at Cashbox Magazine. In 1976 Larry Uttal tapped him to become Head of A&R at Private Stock Records, where he oversaw A&R for such artists as The Mighty Pope, Blondie, Robert Gordon & Link Wray, Benny Mardones, Rupert Holmes, The Dirty Angels and Samantha Sang. Steve produced many artists during the late 70’s, early 80’s such as Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, Bob Halligan and Duke Jupiter (Motown).
In recent years Steven Scharf Entertainment has become an LLC, and evolved to include the film and television licensing of many new independent artists. Following the trend of major television shows which prefer “one-stop shopping”, Steven began representing a diverse range of artists who control their own publishing and masters. This approach created an advantage with music supervisors who require music on short deadlines; removing the need to negotiate at length with publishing companies and record labels.

In LA – NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Session -w- Round Hill Music’s Nick Koletic (Coca-Cola, HBO, Nashville)
×

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!
A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents
Topics
NARIP Session participants have placed over 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions. Other benefits include new publishing deals for NARIP members, creative collaborations and co-writes, strategic introductions to other music supervisors and placement experts, new representation for composers and much more.

ABOUT JULIE D’ANGELO
Julie D’Angelo launched Music For The Masses in 2000, representing music from independent artists and labels that seek placement in movies, television, interactive media, and commercials. “I serve those artists who don’t have a direct conduit to get their music in visual media,” she says. Her roster includes —– As the former Label General Manager for Rhino Movie Music division of Rhino Entertainment, D’Angelo brings a long track record in film and TV music to Music For The Masses. Her success representing an eclectic master recordings catalog and managing a soundtrack label [at Rhino] came because, “I had great music to work with and made myself immediately available and responsive to music decision-makers. The same principles apply to Music For The Masses. Whether we’re dealing with first-time directors seeking Internet licenses or studios seeking music for large budget features, I respond quickly and fairly, with great repertoire.” During her years as Rhino Movie Music’s GM (1995-1999), D’Angelo oversaw A&R, production/mastering, marketing, and design for soundtracks, concept albums, and boxed sets. Her division was responsible for sales of more than 1.3 million records. She also garnered Rhino two Grammy nominations and one win (Titanic: Music As Heard On The Fateful Voyage). Prior to that, she served as Rhino Entertainment’s Media Licensing Manager, pitching and administering more than 150 licensing requests per month. Over the years, D’Angelo developed a personal, hands-on style to music representation. She remains committed to that approach even as others rush to license music via the Internet. “I’m a ‘not-com,'” says D’Angelo. “Music placement is about relationships, personal service, and getting the right music intro the right hands. My roster is a very manageable size, so I can personally and properly represent each artist’s repertoire.”

SOLD OUT: NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Session -w- Secret Road’s Kayla Masnek (Samsung, Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy)
×

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!
A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents
THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT
Is your music getting to decision-makers – people who can say YES and write a check?
Topics
We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event. In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.

ABOUT KAYLA MASNEK

Kayla Masnek was born in San Diego, CA and grew up in Edmond, OK. Upon graduating with a Music Business degree from Oklahoma City University, Kayla returned to her West (best) Coast roots when she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music licensing. A musician (piano, flute) from a young age, she knew from age fourteen that music supervisor was the job for her (thanks to 100 Careers in the Music Industry). Her path has changed a bit since then, as she’s found a passion in working with and helping independent artists by pitching their roster, more specifically over the last six years at Secret Road Music Services. She’s responsible for notable music placements in TV shows including Nashville, This Is Us, Younger, Blindspot, Queen Sugar, Famous In Love, Lucifer, and The Originals, among others. She’s landed music in promos across all major networks, and in trailers for Mudbound, The Florida Project, Transparent and in Manchester By The Sea, to name a few.
