The New Deal: 360 & Beyond
360 deals are a work-in-progress. Can labels and artists create and sustain long-term success in this new model? At a recent program in NARIP's San Francisco chapter, we asked these questions (and more), and award-winning music business attorney Dina LaPolt answered them. Among other things, Dina shared her eight major areas of negotiation for record deals, the right time to make a deal and the best negotiation tactics for established and developing artists.

Dina speaks in New York on June 30 on 360 deals, this time in a mock negotiation with Wind-Up Entertainment's COO & EVP of Business and Legal Affairs, Jim Cooperman. More details here.

Everything is big in Texas, including its musical talent, which is why NARIP will launch its Houston Chapter there on June 18. The event is FREE to attend (RSVP is mandatory). Barry Coffing, CEO and Founder of MusicSupervisor.com and Uprising Entertainment, is appointed NARIP’s Houston Director. "Texas has always been a hotbed for artistic and executive talent, and we see enormous opportunity there. I know of no better person than Barry Coffing to lead the charge for us in this gunslinger state in our gunslinger industry," says NARIP President Tess Taylor. "He's well-connected, highly creative and astute. We are thrilled to have him on board to grow NARIP in this important region." With his professional relationships, especially at major film companies and TV networks on both coasts, and a strong background in the business as an executive and successful composer / artist, Mr. Coffing is uniquely positioned to help NARIP members in Houston identify opportunities in film and television, and to create and sustain long-term careers in the music business today. How To Distribute Music Via Mobile
by Raj Singh

Editor's Note: the following article was part of NARIP's recent "Maximum Music Distribution Via Physical, Digital & Mobile" program in San Francisco at which Raj was a guest speaker. Here are his top ten tips to enable mobile music distribution.

1. Build a Mobile Landing Page

Making your content available from your own site or your “new” mobile site is the most direct way to distribute. Previously, this was a painful process because of the massive browser fragmentation but since browsers have improved significantly, building a simple XHTML web page and integrating some phone detection using WURFL (wurfl.sourceforge.net) or DotMobi is much easier process. In addition, since most phones support MP3 and JPG, codec fragmentation is no longer a concern. And if you wanted to put it behind a payment, see Billing Revolution (www.billingrevolution.com), they offer a simple way to integrate carrier or credit card billing behind your mobile landing page.
