BACKGROUND NARIP members have made placements through these limited enrollment sessions, including most recently Peter Kimmel who placed a song from his catalog (“Soul of a Man Never Dies”) in an episode of True Blood following our session with Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles. These sessions should be of particular interest to those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) music supervisors in Los Angeles. Limited to 15 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. At private sessions in Los Angeles, Berlin, San Francisco and New York, participants have been able to pitch for current opportunities on the spot, receive instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS ![]() Sean Beavan Sean Beavan is a musician, record producer, writer, composer and audio engineer best known for his work with Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, God Lives Underwater, and Slayer. His production style is typically heavy, with heavily saturated guitars, but his work is diverse and wide-ranging as exemplified by bands like No Doubt, System of a Down and indie bands like Thrice and 8mm. Beavan started his career as a musician and engineer in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. He played bass and sang in various local bands, and played fret-less bass with Clevelander Eric Carmen (of The Raspberries) on the song “Hungry Eyes” on the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. While working as an engineer at The Right Track Studio in downtown Cleveland, Beavan met Trent Reznor who worked as the in-house programmer. Reznor also played keyboards in several local bands that Beavan mixed. Reznor asked Beavan to mix the demos of what would eventually become Pretty Hate Machine, which had received multiple offers for record deals. Beavan mixed sound during Nine Inch Nails’ live concerts for many years, eventually becoming an unofficial member of the live band, even singing live backup vocals from his place at the mixing console. Reznor invited him to work on The Downward Spiral as well as mix several songs on Marilyn Manson’s debut record Portrait of an American Family. After contributing to several Nine Inch Nails remix releases (including Closer to God), Beavan mixed and co-produced Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar. In 1996, after 8 years, Beavan left the Nine Inch Nails camp to mix front-of-house for the “Antichrist Superstar” world tour. In late 1997 Beavan and Manson moved into the Hollywood Hills and started production on Mechanical Animals. Beavan went on to produce and mix records for artists as diverse as Guns N’ Roses, God Lives Underwater, System of a Down, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, Slayer, Kill Hannah, HYDE, P.O.D., Paloalto, Thrice, Unwritten Law, MOTH, Kidneythieves, Tommy Stinson, Tiger Lou, Hypernova, and Chronic Future. He also returned to work with Manson, mixing Eat Me, Drink Me. Beavan is currently involved in his own band with his wife Juliette Beavan, and Drummer Jon Nicholson, called 8mm. 8mm have released 4 discs, “Opener”, “Songs To Love And Die By”, “On A Silent Night” (Christmas EP) and the current “Love And The Apocalypse”, all of which have attracted critical acclaim worldwide. 8mm are one of the most licensed artists in the industry. In addition to recently being featured on national promos for “Nip/Tuck” and Yamaha, their music has been popular with TV and film, including “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Nikita”, “Kings”, “One Tree Hill”, “Shark”, “Cold Case”, “Moonlight”, and the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” soundtrack, to name a few. Having supported Sean Lennon on the west coast leg of his North American tour the dynamic Trip hop band are currently regulars in the Los Angeles music scene and have toured the US, Great Britain and South America. After producing and mixing Denver Colorado favorites Meese for Atlantic Records, Beavan worked in the studio with Marilyn Manson on “The High End Of Low” with Chris Vrenna and Twiggy Ramirez at Sage and Sound in Hollywood, followed by mixing the album at his home studio, The Blue Room. Last March found Sean Beavan mixing fellow Clevelanders THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!’s debut record on the newly formed Reversed Image Unlimited record label. Produced by multi-platinum producer Michael Seifert and recorded at Michael’s Ante Up Audio in the heart of downtown Cleveland, Sean mixed the record in their new SSL suite. Beavan followed up by mixing four songs for Japanese-American Sony Records artist Kylee produced by Jeff Turzo of God Lives Underwater fame. Later in the year, he produced and mixed Long Island indy faves Envy on the Coast. A New York City native, SOS moved to Maui in 1991 where he broke the freshest dancehall tracks to scores of locals as well as tourists from around the globe at Studio 505, a Stephen Stills’ nightclub. At that time he also managed and produced Marty Dread & Culture Shock, the most popular reggae band in the islands. 1993 brought him to San Francisco to play venues like Miss Pearl’s Jam House, Kennel Club and others. Together with former partner Stefan G. (video/multimedia specialist), a brand new concept in global sound systems was formed: Positive Sound Massive. PSM features an array of international vocalists, rappers, toasters and musicians, including rapper Wookie J., whom SOS imported from Maui. In the late 1990s, SOS DJ-ed at hundreds of shows throughout California, Nevada, Washington, New York, Australia and New Zealand where he opened for the Beastie Boys “Hello Nasty” World Tour. He has produced dozens of multi-artist stage shows and the Nicodemus “Dancehall Giant Tour,” as well as the Rocker-T “If Yu Luv Luv, Show Ya Luv” national US tour featuring Shinehead and Sleepy Wonder. He has remixed tracks for artists such as: Barrington Levy “Work” (MCA), Capleton “Wings of the Morning” (DefJam/RAL), Beenie Man “Tear off Mi Garment” (Island JA); and produced tracks for artists Nicodemus, Shinehead, Ras Michael, Barrington Levy, Rocker-T, Jamalski, Wookie J., Karney, DJ Collage, Poetz4Peace, and SF local hip hop group New Dealers. SOS worked as Reggae Buyer for Rough Trade Records in San Francisco, and as Reggae Editor for American Music Press, a Bay-Area music monthly. From 1994 through 1998, Steffen was the Production Manager for the Paradise Lounge and Transmission Theater in San Francisco and still found time to write and review for independent publications. He has tour managed Mix Master Mike, traveling the globe on both of Mike’s solo tours and with the Beastie Boys. SOS also fronts an alternative rock group Crocodile Tears, plays bass in a Stoner Rock band called Not For Not, and is a member of “biL” – a dancehall, surf, hip hop, who-knows-what else conglomeration of excellence. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s. At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry. He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career. In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business at INgrooves where he served as Director of Mobile Marketing for 4 years, overseeing the mobile business for the digital label. ![]() Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert Raj Singh is a mobile industry veteran having worked across the space over the past 12 years. While there he dove head first into the music industry by obtaining an internship at Universal Music, a part time job at KARA in San Jose, working at KMEL as a street team member, volunteering at Classified Records all the while attending Cal State Hayward where he received his degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Marketing Management. After working the front lines of retail, Kahlil landed a job at KOCH Records (now E1 Entertainment) as a Field Marketing Representative which eventually transformed into a physical sales position. He serviced all the major accounts as well as some key independent retailers and was one of only two representatives to service the entire Bay Area. After he saw the decline of the physical market, Kahlil changed career paths and moved into an Artist Relations representative position at music merchandise heavyweights, Cinder Block. Kahlil’s responsibilities included signing bands to new merchandise contracts and placing orders for artists that performed worldwide. He was the account lead for a range of bands like the Silversun Pickups, H20, 30 Seconds To Mars and Death By Stereo. Seeing that music was still adapting to different ways to sell music, Kahlil joined the team over at Tribal Brands, the music agency of choice for Verizon Wireless. Starting with clearing artwork for print advertising, Kahlil eventually transferred into the Music Team and helped facilitate the programming of the Verizon VCast Music handset as well as the VCASTMUSIC with Rhapsody online application. He was also an integral part of the team which helped Verizon Wireless decide on who Verizon should team with for tour sponsorships, licensing/synch opportunities, online promotions and in-store activations. After a downturn in the economy, Kahlil planted himself at skyrockit where he was the lead programmer for Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. In the mid-80s he spent two years riding a motorcycle around the world; a few years later he lost his left arm in a motorcycle accident. Since the early 90s he has lived primarily in Sweden with his two daughters. Mr. McAlevey has a proven track record in broadcasting having created two popular Swedish radio networks; Radio Lapland and Right On Radio – but he is best known as the founder of “Bandit 105.5, The Rock Home of Stockholm”. Under his leadership Bandit quickly achieved cult status. Mr. McAlevey subsequently sold the station to RTL, one of the world’s largest media groups. Bandit Radio is still on the air today.
