2013-07-30 In LA – Modern A&R: What You Need To Succeed (and how to make the RIGHT record)
×
NARIP Presents
Modern A&R: What You Need To Succeed
And How To Make The RIGHT Record

on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 (7:00 p.m.)
at LAMA College for Music Professionals in Pasadena, CA

Jump to registration below, click here.

What IS A&R and why does it matter to your success?

A&R is not only critical to the opportunities created for new talent, industry growth and the creation of new jobs, it is THE most critical decision in the record industry. Every investment a record company makes is triggered, directly or indirectly, by an A&R decision.

In this NARIP program, A&R and artist development experts Mark Mazzetti and Michael Carey (who is also a producer) will discuss how they have helped to create and sustain careers for superstar and indie artists (including Sting, Janet Jackson, Dishwalla, Aaron Neville, John Mayer, Robbie Williams, Will Smith, Rascal Flatts and others), guiding their careers to hit singles, platinum sales and global success.

No matter how successful, an artist will ALWAYS benefit from the objective, informed opinions of A&R executives who help craft rough cuts into smash hits.

TO BE DISCUSSED

  • Framing the picture: how to develop all elements necessary to make a great record
  • Does anyone need “A&R” anymore? (often aspiring artists spin their wheels without the benefit of strategic vision of experienced music pros)
  • How to determine direction: song choice, production style, aesthetics
  • How to create hit songs:writing, co-writing or finding outside material
  • Recording, mixing, mastering: process and direction
YOU WILL LEARN

  • Setting realistic goals
  • How the A&R process can help make the RIGHT recording
  • A&R for ANY artist…a must-have
  • The relationship between record company (if any) and talent in the Internet Age
  • How to improve a song, and increase its impact and marketability
  • Necessary creative elements to sell music and establish a career
Don’t miss this insider’s peek at the artistic and economic realities of the fastest-changing business in the world. Most importantly, this NARIP program gives you practical information you can apply immediately to create a better record NOW.

BONUS

Our speakers have agreed to listen and provide feedback live at our event to a few tracks submitted by attendees. These limited slots (one song per person) are available on a first-come, first-served basis and NARIP members will be given priority. When your online registration is complete, you will receive further directions in the registration auto-responder if you wish to submit a song for consideration (there is no additional fee to submit).

You are cordially invited to NARIP’s

Modern A&R and Artist Development:
on Tuesday, October 19, 2010

in Los Angeles

What do Nine Inch Nails, Slayer, No Doubt, Depeche Mode, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down and Thrice have in common?

Sean Beavan.

This Cleveland, Ohio native has distinguished himself as a hit-maker, producer-mixer for a wide range of talent, and will speak to our group during this special session on Tuesday, October 19 about A&R, artist development and bringing the best out of his clients.

Beavan will also listen and provide feedback to NARIP member demos at our session.

A&R and artist development are at the root of every financial decision a record company makes, and vital to the health of our industry. With A&R and artist development cut to the bone at most labels, the producer’s role becomes even more important to help shape and guide talent in the studio, and then into the marketplace.

In this NARIP session, you will discover the magic and the mystery of A&R, who’s getting signed (and who’s not), choosing the right producer, getting the attention of producers and A&R execs, signing with a major or indie, and more.

Get an insider’s peek at the economic and artistic realities of the fastest-changing, hottest business in the world and don’t miss this intimate, unique and interactive learning experience.

SPECIAL BONUS: NARIP Members Get Feedback From Sean

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Sean Beavan

Sean Beavan is a musician, record producer, writer, composer and audio engineer best known for his work with Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, God Lives Underwater, and Slayer. His production style is typically heavy, with heavily saturated guitars, but his work is diverse and wide-ranging as exemplified by bands like No Doubt, System of a Down and indie bands like Thrice and 8mm.

Beavan started his career as a musician and engineer in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. He played bass and sang in various local bands, and played fret-less bass with Clevelander Eric Carmen (of The Raspberries) on the song “Hungry Eyes” on the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. While working as an engineer at The Right Track Studio in downtown Cleveland, Beavan met Trent Reznor who worked as the in-house programmer. Reznor also played keyboards in several local bands that Beavan mixed.

Reznor asked Beavan to mix the demos of what would eventually become Pretty Hate Machine, which had received multiple offers for record deals. Beavan mixed sound during Nine Inch Nails’ live concerts for many years, eventually becoming an unofficial member of the live band, even singing live backup vocals from his place at the mixing console. Reznor invited him to work on The Downward Spiral as well as mix several songs on Marilyn Manson’s debut record Portrait of an American Family. After contributing to several Nine Inch Nails remix releases (including Closer to God), Beavan mixed and co-produced Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar.

In 1996, after 8 years, Beavan left the Nine Inch Nails camp to mix front-of-house for the “Antichrist Superstar” world tour. In late 1997 Beavan and Manson moved into the Hollywood Hills and started production on Mechanical Animals.

Beavan went on to produce and mix records for artists as diverse as Guns N’ Roses, God Lives Underwater, System of a Down, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, Slayer, Kill Hannah, HYDE, P.O.D., Paloalto, Thrice, Unwritten Law, MOTH, Kidneythieves, Tommy Stinson, Tiger Lou, Hypernova, and Chronic Future. He also returned to work with Manson, mixing Eat Me, Drink Me.

Beavan is currently involved in his own band with his wife Juliette Beavan, and Drummer Jon Nicholson, called 8mm. 8mm have released 4 discs, “Opener”, “Songs To Love And Die By”, “On A Silent Night” (Christmas EP) and the current “Love And The Apocalypse”, all of which have attracted critical acclaim worldwide. 8mm are one of the most licensed artists in the industry. ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

Mock Negotiation of
a 360 Record Deal

on Thursday, May 27, 2010 in Los Angeles

With major changes in recording agreements over the past three years, multiple rights or so-called “360 deals” have become more common. In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two top music business attorneys face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a 360 deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

You will learn eight (8) major areas of negotiation for record deals:

1. Artist advance / recording fund
2. Controlled composition clause
3. Guaranteed release clause
4. Pay or play clause
5. No cross-collateralization / separate “pot” for master-tone, voice-tone and DVD monies
6. Tour support / marketing and promotion commitment (videos, etc.)
7. Artist royalty and royalties payable on foreign sales
8. 360 deals: try to limit other ancillary rights (i.e., merchandise, publishing, touring, sponsorships, etc.)

This program will also cover:

– Multiple rights: what are they?
– How to minimize a record company’s involvement in additional rights
– How to obligate a record company to monetize additional rights and maximize returns from a 360 deal
– Important deal points including new 360 provisions, ancillary rights, digital royalties, a discussion of the new publishing royalty rates for mobile, digital downloads, and interactive streaming services.
– The right time to make a deal
– 360 deals for developing artists

Digital Music Rights Deal Mock Negotiation

with Andy Koski & Dean Serwin

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in Los Angeles

With major changes in the digital music licensing landscape, the need for a clear road map when making a deal is needed now more than ever.

Especially important are the distinctions between digital-only deals (where in many cases companies may represent themselves as labels but are in fact only modified music libraries) vs. actual record deals. Both have advantages.

Advantages of each type of deal will be discussed at this NARIP program, and our experts will explain what you need to know. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect a rights holder’s options and income.

Get the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal. Also to be discussed: the pros and cons of some of the major digital music services.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a digital music license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

Attorneys and non-attorneys are welcome.
You need not be a NARIP member to attend.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • Important deal points including ancillary rights, royalty rates for mobile, digital downloads, and interactive streaming services.
  • Rights and revenue streams typically included
  • What parties enter into digital music license deals?
  • Difference between a digital-only deal and a record agreement
  • Ancillary rights
  • Calculation of royalties and basic revenue-sharing structures: % net, % retail, wholesale vs. retail, “PPD”, “Penny rate”
  • Rate, term, marketing guarantees, channel control, guaranteed release
  • Fee ranges for various services
  • New business models
  • The right time to make a deal
  • Deals for developing artists
Sample agreement provided.

ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

Mock Negotiation of
a 360 Recording Agreement

on Tue, Oct 27, 2009 in Los Angeles

With major changes in recording agreements over the past three years, multiple rights or so-called “360 deals” have become more common. In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two top music business attorneys and an artist manager face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

5. No cross-collateralization / separate “pot” for mastertone, voicetone and DVD monies

ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

How To Market & License Music For Video Games

on Thursday, November 19, 2009

in Los Angeles

With declining record sales, the focus on placing music in film, TV and other media such as video games has skyrocketed. Placements are the new coin of the realm, and in this latest of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, we bring in top experts to face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues in a music-in-video-game license agreement.

Join us for this special session with music and interactive software entertainment attorney Jim Charne and Worldwide Executive of Music and Marketing, and President of Artwerk Music Group for Electronic Arts Steve Schnur (other speakers TBA). We will also discuss marketing music for video games to make it more attractive to buyers, where to find them and how to put yourself in line for the most favorable possible deal.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

YOU WILL LEARN:

The right time to make a deal.

Major areas of negotiation, including:

  • Terms
  • Options
  • Fee ranges
  • Deliverables
  • Clearances
  • Things to avoid
  • Closing the deal

Also:

  • Case studies: what works, what doesn’t and why
  • Making the pitch: necessary elements
  • Timing
  • What music buyers such as gaming companies really look for
  • How to increase the impact and marketability of music

Steve Schnur

As Worldwide Executive of Music and President of Artwerk Music Group for Electronic Arts, Steve Schnur is responsible for the pursuit, creation and continuous development of the global vision for music in EA games. He has brought established stars, breakthrough new artists and award-winning composers to top-selling EA franchises, changing the industry’s perception of video games from simple licensing opportunities to a series of groundbreaking and award winning scores and soundtracks. His hands-on approach with composer selection and score production has earned EA over 50 soundtrack nominations over the last 8 years. His extensive relationships with major recording artists and music managers have helped to create a series of original compositions which now fill the EA music library with valuable copyrights. Steve brought this vision into the multi-billion dollar game space from his experience in both the film and recording industries as a successful music supervisor and music producer.

In 2005, he created EA Recordings, a digital record label focused on the distribution of EA’s enormous collection of scores and songs. In 2008, he formed Artwerk Music Group, through which EA now directly signs, develops and launches artists for publishing, master recordings, sync deals and distribution. Prior to joining EA in 2001, he held various executive positions with the Warner Music Group, MTV, EMI and BMG, and has supervised and produced music for films including CRUEL INTENTIONS and MISS CONGENIALITY (which garnered a Golden Globe nomination for best original song).

Steve has been profiled by the New York Times, London Financial Times and CNN. Additionally, he was selected as “One Of The Most Creative People In Entertainment” by Entertainment Weekly, both “One of the Most Powerful People in the Music Business” and “One of the Top 20 Power Players in Digital Entertainment” by Billboard Magazine, “One of The Top 25 Power Players in the new Hollywood” by The Wall Street Journal and in 2009 was awarded “International Music Person of the Year” by MusExpo.

Steve Schnur is also a board member of City Of Hope, a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), a board member of the Country Music Association and currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Grammy Foundation.
