ABOUT NARIP A&R PITCH SESSIONS

NARIP’s A&R Pitch Sessions are small, intimate pitch sessions (limited to 12 participants) with some of the best A&R executives in the business today. At each NARIP A&R Pitch Session, one A&R executive will listen and provide live feedback to music presented to him for analysis and consideration for label acts who accept outside material. Participants will receive an advance brief of the A&R executive’s current music needs to enable them to prepare the most focused pitch.

DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD : SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 150 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. Registrants also get a brief of the guest supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback at each session, taking the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and get them licensed.

ABOUT RIGGS MORALES

Riggs Morales is Vice President of A&R and Artist Development at Atlantic Records and has A&R-ed albums which have sold 23 million copies. He was formerly a music editor at The Source magazine. Between 1995 and 2001, Riggs wrote and edited stories while overseeing columns such as Hip-Hop Quotable, Fat Mix-Tape, Singles Watch, the 5-Mic Rating System as well as the Unsigned Hype page, where he spotlighted young acts such as David Banner, Kardinal Official, Juelz Santana and Eminem. After six years at The Source, Morales gave up full-time writing duties to pursue the executive side of the business. By 2000, Morales was overseeing production management at Goliath Artists, Inc., the management firm of music executive Paul Rosenberg. Morales helped Goliath expand clientele by heading the Producer Management division of the company, where he helped navigate the careers of artists such as DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Dame Grease, DJ Shock, The Beatnuts and The Alchemist. In 2001, Rosenberg and Eminem appointed him as Director of A&R at Shady Records. In 2002, Morales signed artist 50 Cent who went on to sell over 10 million records worldwide. As Senior Director of A&R for Shady Records, Riggs would go on to A&R the following releases:

• 50 Cent – Get Rich or Die Tryin, (10X Platinum)
• D12 – D12 World, (2X Platinum)]
• Obie Trice – Cheers, (1.3 Platinum)

In January 2004, Morales was voted number one A&R in the world by HitQuarters, a website that tracks the work of music executives. A month later, Morales created the Free Yayo campaign for 50 Cent. Eminem wore a shirt promoting the campaign during his performance at the 2004 Grammy Awards. In 2005, Morales founded The Monday Night Fight Klub, a bi-weekly event that pitted emcees against each other in a verbal competition. MNFK was later developed into an MTV series Morales’ company, Rigg’d Up, Inc. partnered with Quincy Jones III’s QD3 Entertainment (Beef, Tupac: Thug Angel, The MC) to create hip-hop based content that range from in a variety of mediums including television, movies, and DVDs. Outside of his duties at Shady Records, Morales has consulted for corporations such as Pepsi Inc., Sony Records, PolyGram, Adidas and has served as on-air correspondent for MTV and VH1. Morales has also remained a freelance writer for XXL, Vibe, Scratch, Urban Latino and Mass Appeal, and has written biographies for Pun, Eminem, Clipse, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, the Beatnuts and producers such as Buckwild, The Alchemist, Muggs of Cypress Hill. Additionally, he co-wrote the book Angry Blonde with Eminem. Most recently, Riggs was brought in by MTV to mentor three finalists for their Advance Warning competition in Africa.. The show aired in December 2008 and will feature Riggs working with and developing the three finalist as they attempt to create hit records with international appeal. In late 2008, Morales partnered with Razor & Tie to release projects under his Rigg’d Up label. The first release on Rigg’d Up will be the solo debut from hip-hop artist Black Thought of the Roots crew. The album is due out in the fall of 2009 and will feature production from DJ Premier, Salaam Remi and JR Rotem.

Lauren King is Executive Producer and Head of Music for Young & Rubicam (Y&R) New York where she works with global brands such as Dell, Bank of America, Land Rover, Campbells and others. Previously she was Head of Music & Talent at ad agency Mother where she orchestrated the Sour Patch Kids / Method Man deal that won a Bronze Cannes Lion award. ABOUT LLOYD WINSTON

With 25+ years of professional experience, Lloyd spent the early years of his career in the music industry at Warner Brothers, Polygram and Interscope where he signed Tupac Shakur to his first publishing deal and produced the first million-selling hip-hop record for Irving Azoff’s Giant Records. He has played a role in managing the careers of many artists including the Jets, Boyz II Men, En Vogue and Sister Sledge. In this respect, Lloyd has contributed to the sale of over 37 million records. In 1997, Lloyd joined BBDO and brought his music industry expertise to the advertising industry. He later moved on to JWT as a Music Producer before joining Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide as Partner, Music Business Affairs. Finally, he used his combined ad-side and artist-side experience and landed at Corbis Entertainment where he now heads the music services group, looking after all music-related needs of CE clients from music rights negotiations and licensing for advertising to large-scale brand partnerships to product integrations in music videos.

ABOUT MILENA FESSMANN

Since 1991, Milena Fessmann has worked as a DJ and Presenter for various radio stations, and currently DJs at Radio Eins/RBB (since 1996) with her own weekly show called “free falling“. She is moderator of several national and international events and panels such as Cartoon Movie Award (Potsdam 2002-2008) and works for Meet The Filmmakers at the Apple-Store, Berlin. In 1989 she founded the music supervision company CINESONG and has music supervised over 140 movies including “Pina” by Wim Wenders which received an Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Film 2012). In 2011 she founded Sugar Town Filmproduktion Gmbh & Co. Kg and is currently producing the music documentary “Who’s That Man” about the famous German music producer Conny Plank and has three other fiction projects in development. She is a member of the European Soundtrack Academy and teaches at the DFFB Film School, Berlin.

ABOUT GERRIT WINTERSTEIN

A musician with a background in business management of audiovisual media, Gerrit’s involvement with music, instruments and any other objects which make sounds can be traced back to his first months in 1973. His calling to focus on the marketing and production side of things, thereby creating a platform for musicians and enabling multiple ways to utilize their work, came early. Work experience: 1996-98 studio manager and sound assistant at Peppermint Park GmbH (Mousse T, Bootsy Collins, Cultured Pearls), 1998-2000 A&R marketing assistant at Laughing Horse Music GmbH (Echt), 2000-2005 A&R manager and exploitation manager at SMV Schacht Musikverlage GmbH (including Carl Douglas, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Peter Thomas, Boozoo Bajou). Distinct hands-on experience in international and national synchronization and licensing rights, as well as in music and sound production, and the works. In 2005, together with Jung von Matt Group, Gerrit co-founded White Horse Music GmbH. In early 2014 he openes another office in Berlin and runs both company locations from there.

Tess Taylor, President

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded over 150 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London. Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network and was instrumental in launching the Mowglis, a pop band now on a major US tour. Selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam Music Contest, the Mowglis won the grand prize and one talent judge signed the band to a management deal. They then got a talent agent, signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records, have been featured on prime-time network TV and are now getting radio airplay on primary market stations across the US.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio University (2008). She won both times. She has lectured at institutions across the nation and around the world ranging from the Harvard Business School to local colleges and universities. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo. Ms. Taylor encourages people to adopt pets and not buy them.

Emily Warren is the Executive Talent Buyer at Nolen Reeves Music, Inc. based in Atlanta, GA and buys for 6 rooms in 5 venues including Smith’s Olde Bar – The Music Room and The Atlanta Room (Atlanta, GA), Big Tex Decatur (Decatur, GA), The Nick (Birmingham, AL), Pelham’s (Jacksonville, AL) and Brother’s Bar (Jacksonville, AL). She has been in the music industry for 7 years, working with Dan Nolen & Mike Reeves, assisting in day-to-day operations for all venues. The Georgia Theatre was recently sold to a group of ‘silent’ investors, but Scott plans to continue booking talent and adding to the approximately 200 shows that populated the Georgia Theatre’s calendar in 2013 (including Big Boi, Pretty Lights, Washed Out, Umphrey’s McGee, Willie Nelson). Scott was chiefly responsible for expanding and diversifying the Georgia Theatre’s concert calendar over the years by introducing a popular Rooftop concert series that has filled the gaps in the slower summer months and given smaller bands an opportunity to play at the famous music venue. He is currently the house buyer for Terminal West (Atlanta, Georgia) and a regional Independent Promoter in addition to booking for the Georgia Theatre.?

Sean Mcpherson is a record producer, artist manager, concert promoter and talent buyer from Atlanta, GA. He started in the music business in 1998 when he landed an internship at Chicago Trax Recording Studios owned by Reid Hyams and Al Jorgensen of Ministry. After graduating from the conservatory of recording arts and sciences he assistant engineered in NYC at Battery studios (Zomba) and Chung King Studios where he worked with such artists as Faith Hill, David Bowie and Sixpence None the Richer. In 2001 he took a job at Parkview Recording with legendary house producer Lenny Fontana where he mixed records for Crystal Waters, Byron Stingley and C&C Music Factory, among others. After that Sean joined a band in Fairfield, CT called Zerochance which brought him to Atlanta. Zerochance signed to Red Carpet Music in 2005 and has shared the Stage with Sheryl Crowe, The Calling, Uncle Cracker, Stroke 9, Cheyenne Kimball, Ashley Simpson and others. In the past 10 years Sean has founded, built, owned and operated East Atlanta Recording and is now the assistant talent buyer at Smiths Olde Bar in Atlanta where he has booked acts such as Drivin ‘N’ Cryin, Matt Nathanson, and Shovels and Rope for his company Thirsty Ear Productions. Sean also manages 3 groups for his company Favorite Son Artist Management and Consulting (The Head, The Judies, and the Blackfoot Gypsies). Several of Sean’s productions have been released by Universal, Brash Records and Slushfund Recordings. He recently co-produced several songs with Jody Stephens from Big Star and Mitch Easter (REM, Pavement, Ben Folds).

Tony began his career in music management working as an assistant for Aaron Walton Entertainment; an entertainment company specializing in management for a variety of talented artists. He then transitioned over to independent music supervision by working as an assistant to Dawn Soler. Dawn has been supervising Film and TV for over twenty years, working on such movies as Dumb and Dumber, Princess Diaries I & II, Catwoman, Dead Man Walking, Hollywood Homicide, Enchanted and more. Tony co-supervised some films with Dawn and a few on his own before making the jump to TV as a music supervisor for the hit series Ugly Betty. He independently supervised Ugly Betty for the first season and simultaneously was hired by ABC Studios to work as Creative Director for the TV music department. ABC Studios has produced many successful on-air shows for multiple broadcast and cable networks. Some of the series shows include Army Wives, Castle, Cougar Town, Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Happy Endings, Nashville, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, and Scandal. Over the course of six years at ABC Studios, he oversaw all aspects of music for their shows and assisted with providing music for the ABC Marketing & Promo department with their TV campaigns. Currently, Tony is supervising several shows under creator Bill Lawrence including Cougar Town, Surviving Jack, UnDateable and Ground Floor. He also manages the artist Rivvrs who will release his first EP in August. Another project of Tony’s is AppStage, a mobile app that enhances the live show experience by providing more band-to-fan interaction before, during and after the show. It also serves as a hub for each specific event. He is also co-founder of The Happiest Hour, a TV/FILM/MUSIC industry mixer that has been around for nine years and running.

With over thirty years experience as an attorney in the music industry, Steven Winogradsky is a partner in Winogradsky/Sobel in Studio City, California, providing global media and music business affairs & legal support for composers, songwriters, music publishers, recording artists and television, film, video and multi-media producers. In addition to an entertainment law practice, the company handles music clearance and licensing in all media for many production companies, worldwide administration of the publishing catalogs for a number of clients and New Media strategies and Revenue Modeling.

Prior to being in solo practice with The Winogradsky Company from 1992 to 2009, Mr. Winogradsky had served as Director of Music Business Affairs for Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc., Managing Director of Music, Legal & Business Affairs for MCA Home Entertainment, Director of Music Licensing and Administration for Universal Pictures and Universal Television and Vice President of Business Affairs for The Clearing House, Ltd.

He was twice elected President of the California Copyright Conference, after spending nine years on the Board of Directors, and also served for four years as President of The Association of Independent Music Publishers.

Mr. Winogradsky is the author of the book “Music Publishing: The Complete Guide” published in 2013, which is being used as the textbook in music business programs around the country. He was also awarded the 2012 Texas Star Award by the Texas State Bar Entertainment and Sports Law section for his contributions to legal education in the State of Texas. Mr. Winogradsky is an adjunct professor at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in the Masters degree program in Music Industry Administration and was also named as one of the Outstanding Instructors in Entertainment Studies and Performing Arts at UCLA Extension, where he has taught since 1997.

She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded over 100 music placements for participants and sold out in LA, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London. She is also President of the LA Music Network (LAMN.com) and helped launch the Mowglis who won the 2011 LAMN Jam Music Contest. They were signed to a management deal, then signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records. They’ve been featured on prime time network TV and now get radio airplay on primary stations across the US. One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has been called The Job Whisperer and has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. Called a “super-connector” and dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by Neophonic music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee franchise, Nip/Tuck, CSI: Miami), Ms. Taylor works with international groups to connect their members to opportunities in LA and the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG) and Concord Records. Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” twice. She won both times. She lectures nationwide and around the world (in 12 countries to date), including at the Harvard Business School, in Berlin, Bangalore and beyond. From 1988 to 1993 she was employed at MCA Record, last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the Univeristy of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, Glenn Gould, Pete Townshend, crime novels and hiking with her English cocker spaniel Haribo. She encourages pet adoption.

ABOUT NARIP A&R PITCH SESSIONS

NARIP’s A&R Pitch Sessions are small, intimate events (limited to 16 participants) with some of the best A&R executives in the business today. At each NARIP A&R Pitch Session, one A&R executive will listen and provide live feedback to music presented to him for analysis and consideration for label acts who accept outside material. Participants receive an advance brief of the A&R executive’s current music needs to enable them to prepare the most focused pitch.

ABOUT MIO VUKOVIC

In September 2012, Mio Vukovic was appointed Senior Vice President of A&R/Head of Creative for the Disney Music Group. In his post, Vukovic is responsible for all aspects of artist and songwriter signings, as well as creative direction of the recorded music and publishing operations which include Hollywood Records, Walt Disney Records and Disney Music Publishing. Vukovic is based at Disney’s Burbank headquarters.

From 2007, Vukovic had been an A&R consultant for Hollywood Records, where he was instrumental in bringing in key hit songs to artists such as Selena Gomez (“Who Says”) and Miley Cyrus (“Party In The U.S.A”). More recently he oversaw A&R for upcoming new albums by Bridgit Mendler and ZZ Ward. Since Vukovic joined DMG, he has been an essential part of the company’s chart-topping success. Multi-platinum Hollywood Records artist Demi Lovato debuted at # 3 in the US with her latest opus, Demi, making this her 4th top ten debuting album. Julie Kessler Roach received her Juris Doctor degree from Emory University School of Law, and graduated with a certificate in Transactional Law and Skills. She graduated* magna cum laude* from the University of Georgia with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Music and Philosophy. She is admitted to practice law in the State of Georgia.

Julie has worked with ASCAP, at The Coca-Cola Company, and with several solo practitioners. She was also on the executive board for Emory’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society. Julie is an active member of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals board and the planning committee for the Atlanta Bar’s annual LawJam as well as a member of the American Bar Association and State Bar of Georgia Entertainment and Sports Law sections. By popular demand, Tess Taylor and Jason Spiewak will expand upon NARIP’s “How To Create A Music Marketing Plan” and turn it into a monthly series.

Jason Spiewak is the President and founder of JLS Artist Management and Noble Steed Music, whose current management clients include Tony Lucca, Brendan James, and Honor By August. Early in his career, Spiewak held positions in A&R and online marketing at independent record companies Artemis Records, Studio E Records and TVT Records. Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP.com), the biggest music business network in the world. High Bias’s Danny Exum is our special guest at this NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Trailers have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

Jonathan recently music supervised the ninth season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians on the E! Entertainment; Love Games for the Oxygen Channel and The Weinstein Company documentary Salinger. Other credits include Interscope Presents The Next Episode for Showtime Entertainment, The Education of Max Bickford for CBS, U.C. Undercover for NBC, Celebrity Undercover for MTV and the theatrical release The Big Tease for Warner Bros. Pictures. Jonathan has also worked in A&R for Capitol Records and Universal Music Publishing, as well as Taxi, an independent A&R service.
