How To Market & License Music For Film & TV

on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

in New York

With declining record sales, the focus on placing music in film, TV and other media has skyrocketed. Placements are the new coin of the realm, and in this latest of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, four experts face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues in a music license agreement.

We will also discuss marketing music for film and TV to make it more attractive to buyers, where to find them and how to put yourself in line for the most favorable possible deal.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

360 Record Deal Mock Negotiation

on Thursday, April 19, 2012 in New York

With major changes in recording agreements in recent years, multiple rights or so-called “360 deals” have become more common. In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two attorneys and one artist manager explain what these deals encompass. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a 360 deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

Attorneys and non-attorneys are welcome.

  • The right time to make a deal
  • 360 deals for developing artists
Also to be addressed:

  • What is the nature of the label’s (or other party’s) participation in each of the various revenue streams, active or passive?

2018-06-05 In New York – NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Session -w- Steve Scharf (Lucifer, Shameless, NCIS, Bloodline, E3)
×

Scharf-5-UP

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!

A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check?

The Synch Agents* featured in NARIP Pitch Sessions are among the top sales and marketing executives who actively place music owned by songwriters, composers and independent music publishers.

Many music buyers – directors, producers and music supervisors – name these Synch Agents as among their go-to music providers.  These Agents, who NARIP has researched and interviewed,  have placed thousands of songs in blockbuster films, hit television shows, trailers, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and video games.

At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch Synch Agents for current placement opportunities and representation, and get immediate feedback.

Come meet these career-makers.

BACKGROUND

Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and trailers for NARIP members.

NARIP members have also secured publishing deals and formed creative collaborations too numerous to mention as a direct result of these NARIP’s Sessions.

Topics

  • Access multiple potential buyer placemente
  • Trends in synch licensing and agent deals
  • Exclusive, non-exclusive, single-song deals
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Royalties, copyright ownership, rights retention
  • Fees and deal points between synch agents and their clients
  • Which synch agents seek a transfer of copyright(s) for their services, and under what circumstances
  • Song re-titling

Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.  At hundreds of NARIP Sessions, we asked every guest music supervisor how to better market music to them.  Their one consistent piece of advice?  Get representation!

At NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the synch agents and they to get to know you.

Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for possible representation and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.

* Synch Agent: A synchronization or “synch” agent represents music copyrights – either the composition, the sound recordings, or both.  They pitch music to buyers and their representatives, including to music supervisors.  Synch agents are typically compensated on a commission basis and do not own or control the copyrights they represent.  While synch agents usually focus on entertainment and media exploitations, traditional songplugger services also include placement of represented songs with recording artists.

What is a Synch Agent (and WHY you need one)?  View video (:60 seconds)

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:

PREPARATION IS KEY

As with NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions, NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the guest, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Synch Agent Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs.

In addition to pitching for current placement opportunities, NARIP’s guest Synch Agents will consider music pitched for representation.

Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.

DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.

AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 1,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. OVER 1,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed over 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions.  Other benefits include new publishing deals for NARIP members, creative collaborations and co-writes, strategic introductions to other music supervisors and placement experts, new representation for composers and much more. NARIP’S BIGGEST PLACEMENT TO DATE : VODAFONE Click here to read about NARIP’s biggest placement to date in a Vodafone campaign (Oct 2014) that paid handsomely and launched a career.  Other brand placements include McDonalds and AT&T ads, among others. Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

At that time, Steven aligned himself in a joint partnership with Freddy and Caroline Bienstock of Carlin America, Inc. – one of the most prestigious independent music publishers in the world where he served as Senior V.P. Creative for Carlin America, overseeing the licensing of well established songwriters and artists such as AC/DC, Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf), The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Turtles, James Brown, Bobby Darin, and Billie Holiday.  Prior to the creation of Steven Scharf Entertainment, Steven Scharf spent nearly  30 years working in the recording industry as a record producer, head of A&R, and talent manager. His career began in 1969, when he was privileged to apprentice at the famed Muscle Shoals studio in Sheffield. Alabama. While there he worked with legendary artists as The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Lynyrd Skynyrd, R.B. Greaves, and with such producers and engineers as Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Steve Smith.   As his career progressed, Steve moved on to work at GSF Records in the early 70’s and held a staff editorial position at Cashbox Magazine.  In 1976 Larry Uttal tapped him to become Head of A&R at Private Stock Records, where he oversaw A&R for such artists as The Mighty Pope, Blondie, Robert Gordon & Link Wray, Benny Mardones, Rupert Holmes, The Dirty Angels and Samantha Sang.  Steve produced many artists during the late 70’s, early 80’s such as Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, Bob Halligan and Duke Jupiter (Motown). In recent years Steven Scharf Entertainment has become an LLC, and evolved to include the film and television licensing of many new independent artists. Following the trend of major television shows which prefer “one-stop shopping”, Steven began representing a diverse range of artists who control their own publishing and masters. This approach created an advantage with music supervisors who require music on short deadlines; removing the need to negotiate at length with publishing companies and record labels.  TESTIMONIALS

Come hear a music publishing deal explained and negotiated – live!!

NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series features two top experts who will face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues in a publishing deal that affect a songwriter’s rights and income.

NARIP’s series de-mystifies deal-making and enables the lawyer and non-lawyer alike to come away with a clear grasp of the most important deal points and leverage available. Infinitely better than merely READING about it, see the deal duked out and DONE right before your eyes.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a publishing deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

You will learn major areas of negotiation for publishing deals including:

  • Songwriter development
  • Advances
  • Sources and types of income
  • Collection & division of income
  • Filing copyright notices
  • Reversion
  • Show me the money! How to ensure effective catalog administration.
This program will also cover:

  • Important deal points including digital royalties, a discussion of the new publishing royalty rates for mobile, digital downloads, and interactive streaming services.
  • The right time to make a deal
  • Publishing deals for developing songwriters
Sample music publishing agreement will be provided.

Tom O’Keefe
President & Founder, Neurodisc Records & Publishing, Inc.

Tom O’Keefe is President and Founder of Neurodisc Records (est. 1992), one of the longest running indie labels in the business. Primarily an electronic music company, Neurodisc has also established a footprint in New Age, Dance, Pop, Classical and Rock. Tom has merged his love for music and musicianship with a company focused on quality and innovation. He has architected many major label deals for Neurodisc including deals with Priority Records, Capitol Records, Epic Records, EMI Music Marketing and Distribution, and most recently with Universal Music Group and INgrooves / Fontana distribution. You can hear Neurodisc’s music in major Hollywood films such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith (starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), in independent films and on television. A number of channels – including CNN, MTV, The Weather Channel and others – rely on Neurodisc music for features, specials and background sound. Foreign licensing deals in Japan, throughout Europe and Russia have also been areas of Neurodisc focus. Visibility at MIDEM (Cannes) and the ADE (Amsterdam) have made Neurodisc a go-to indie for United States representation in select genres. Tom is responsible for signing and bringing to market one of today’s most influential and successful Ambient artists, Norway’s Amethystium. To date, Amethystium has created a catalog of releases (all of which charted on Billboard’s Electronic or New Age charts) that appear in commercials and have been included on dozens of world-class chill out compilations internationally. In addition to signing and discovering international artists, Tom focuses on the continued development of Neurodisc artists and electronic production duo Blue Stone, and the Latin electronic act Bella Sonus. Tom has curated and performed A&R services for national projects with major hotel chains, clubs, spas and retailers from concept to fruition, including the “Beauty series” for Barnes & Noble, The W Hotel, Tokyo Hilton, and Borders Books & Music among others. He engineered the concept of licensing foreign music for compilations and modeling them after popular (and VERY expensive) imports, by packaging, marketing and selling them at a domestic price, and bypassing expensive import taxes and duties. With a strong and lean list of producers and artists by his side, Tom’s focus is to grow his label and publishing companies, develop artist careers and present them with opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach.

Tess Taylor, President (panel moderator)
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded 50+ music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London. Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network and was instrumental in launching the Mowglis, a pop band now on a major US tour. Selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam Music Contest, the Mowglis won the grand prize and one talent judge signed the band to a management deal. They then got a talent agent, signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records, have been featured on prime-time network TV and are now getting radio airplay on primary market stations across the US.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio University (2008). She won both times. She has lectured at institutions across the nation and around the world ranging from the Harvard Business School to local colleges and universities. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo. Ms. Taylor encourages people to adopt pets and not buy them.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded almost 100 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London.

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions:

Intimate Pitch Meetings With Top Music Supervisors

with Matt Biffa

on Thursday, November 6, 2014
in London, England

DETAILS

Matt Biffa is our special guest at this NARIP Music Supervisor Session in London.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch the supervisor for current opportunities.

ABOUT MATT BIFFA

After buying T-Rex’s “Ride A White Swan”, Matt began stealing from his parents’ record collection and watched taped episodes of “The Old Grey Whistle Test” more times than was strictly healthy for an impressionable young mind. He spent his seventeenth year listening to nothing but Tom Waits’ “Rain Dogs” and “Swordfishtrombones”, something he is convinced is responsible for his belief that Radiohead’s “Kid A” is a nice pop record.

Matt joined Air-Edel in 1996. He was quickly recognized as something of an anorak / musical know-all, and cut his creative teeth sourcing music for commercials, such as Jonathan Glazer’s “Guinness – Swimblack” campaign. During this time he began cultivating relationships with key members of the music industry, an activity also known as “ligging”. This stood him in good stead when he began clearing songs for feature films, but did nothing for his health. As well as having a disturbingly encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of popular music, he has garnered a reputation for being a canny negotiator.

He considers one of the high points of his career to be “Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire”, for which he put together a wizarding rock group consisting of Jarvis Cocker from Pulp, and Jonny Greenwood and Philip Selway from Radiohead. He’s also very quietly proud of being the man responsible for putting Nick Cave’s “O Children” in a Harry Potter film.

Biffa is known for his work on Snatch, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Current projects include London Fields, Paddington and Posh. Other credits include Frank, Filth, Top Boy (TV Series), The Numbers Station, The Crash Reel, Fresh Meat (TV Series), Made in Chelsea (TV Series), Unfinished Song, Seven Psychopaths, Killer Elite (music supervisor), Combat Hospital (TV Series), Sirens (TV Series) and others.

Come meet this career-maker.

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session With Music Supervisor
from Hollywood, CA

Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm

on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 (1:00 p.m.)
at the BPI in London

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT
Jump to registration below, click here.

DETAILS

A top-rated music supervisor in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in London: Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm. Gumm commissions, licenses and places music for global feature film trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters as well as for independent films, global advertising campaigns and television. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

Trailers – which represents a large part of Gumm’s client work – have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

ABOUT BOBBY GUMM

Bobby Gumm is a Music Director at Trailer Park, a large multi-faceted ad agency that specializes in movie trailers. Prior to Trailer Park he began his career at Intralink Film and then spent several years with Flyer Entertainment. With almost a decade of music supervision experience, Gumm has supervised well over one hundred trailers including Batman Begins, Up, Avatar, J Edgar and Batman: Arkham City. Some of his recent credits include trailers for The Dark Knight Rises, Anchorman 2, The Great Gatsby, Brave, Horrible Bosses, Pacific Rim, Iron Man 3, the Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D and Guilt Trip.

Come meet this career-maker.

SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP’s small sessions (limited enrollment of 16 people per session) guarantee face-time with our guest, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. You get to meet and pitch our guest for current opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song or cue is appropriate or not, and most importantly, WHY. This feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. Participants even have the opportunity to re-work music to better fit a supervisor’s needs.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIP”s music supervisor sessions have earned praise and and placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session With Music Supervisor
from Los Angeles:

whoopsie daisy music’s Madonna Wade-Reed

on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 (6:30 p.m.)
at SAE Institute London, UK

SOLD OUT

Jump to registration below, click here.

DETAILS

Hailing from Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, Madonna Wade-Reed is the special guest at our next NARIP London Music Supervisor Session. Her television career has included work on series such as Charlie’s Angels, Blue Mountain State, Smallville, Castle, What About Brian, Barbershop, One Tree Hill, Alias and Felicity and such films as Fred: The Movie, The Perfect Score, My Boss’s Daughter, Careless and the yet to be released A Thousand Words starring Eddie Murphy and Kerry Washington. She is currently supervising the third season of the SpikeTV series Blue Mountain State and Jane By Design for ABC Family which has just been picked up for Season 2. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch her for current opportunities.

Come meet this career-maker.

SUCCESS STORIES & BACKGROUND

NARIP members have made placements through these limited enrollment sessions, including most recently Peter Kimmel who has secured multiple placements. These include placing “The Big One” in the film Chronicle, “Soul of a Man Never Dies” in an episode of True Blood and “Jhiara” in an episode of Dexter following NARIP sessions with Andrea von Foerster and Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles. You can read more about it here.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) ad agency music supervisors in the business.

Limited to 15 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. At private sessions this year in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin and London participants were able to pitch for current opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MET key players in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At our next session in London, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities for current campaigns and get immediate, direct feedback from one ad agency music supervisor.

A NEW ACCESS POINT

“We have created an access point that wasn’t available before,” says Tess Taylor, president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) and creator of the series. “We’re thrilled with the success of these sessions in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Berlin, as are participants. This broadens the access to music, access that might otherwise not exist. We’re grateful for the positive reception we received in London at our first sessions there in November, and look forward to bringing many more to this city that has produced some of the best-loved music in the world.”

NARIP’s sessions diversify potential usage of music and are appropriate for those who represent catalogs of all sizes.

What attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions (with film / TV and ad agency music supervisors) held earlier this year in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Berlin:

  • “Getting personal and immediate feedback… was very valuable.” – Cathi Gibson, Rough Trade (attended Chris Mollere session in London)

  • “Straight talking honesty, love it! Very rare in this industry, the whole event from start to finish was faultless, best event I have been to by far.” – Guy Stanway, ZY Records (attended Chris Mollere and Andrea von Foerster sessions in London)

  • “Most valuable: honest opinions and face time with the supervisors. The overall quality of the event and the people involved was great – friendly, interesting, informative – and most of all very useful. A lot of these seminars promise a lot and deliver very little – these DO deliver. And after being in the industry 15 years, I feel like I actually learnt something!! Great!!!” – Julie Weir, Visible Noise (attended Chris Mollere and Andrea von Foerster sessions in London)

  • “I had a great time last week and learned a lot. It was a real inspiration … I already feel indebted to you for such a fantastic week, it was very exciting to meet you and the team.” – Sarah Llewelyn, Tonal.org.uk (attended Andrea von Foerster session in London)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent (attended Gary Calamar’s session in LA)

  • “I applaud NARIP in establishing these sessions!” – Richard Khuzami, Dahdoo Productions (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Such an amazing night … I have been to many such events but have never felt this kind of intimacy and accessibility, and came away feeling like I really made a super connection in the industry. At Jessica [Dierauer’s] session I gave her a CD of 30 and 60 second clips. Her assistant emailed me yesterday (before I even followed up!) to say that they can use some of my tracks and needed some metadata (another lesson I learned at NARIP’s session about imprinting metadata onto all tracks!). So I am thrilled to have made such a great contact in the ad biz because of NARIP. So how can I not attend all your amazing sessions knowing I will make such high level contacts that would have been very difficult for me to have made on my own? I can’t wait for the next session!” and feedback following Ryan Fitch’s session: “Last night’s session with Ryan Fitch was wonderful! Ryan is a straight shooter with class and sensitivity and I got a lot out of the session in terms of what he is looking for. I have made incredible contacts in the advertising business because of NARIP and there is no other music networking group that comes close to what NARIP offers, I’m a fan!” Gail Vareilles, Sandshifter Music (attended 5 sessions in New York with Jessica Dierauer, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “Please keep me informed of the next NARIP sessions in London and LA. Once again, many thanks for the opportunity to pitch.” – Reza Davoudi, Nineteen95 Artist Management (attended Andrea von Foerster’s and Gary Calamar’s sessions in Berlin, and Andrea con Foerster’s and Chris Mollere’s sessions in London)

  • “Was lots of fun and learned a ton of new things. Both Jessica and Ed were great. Also, the anecdotes (e.g. Serge Gainsbourg’s daughter rejecting AXE) are priceless. Thanks again for coordinating these wonderful sessions. I will highly recommend to others.” – David Liang, Shanghai Restoration Project (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York and John Houlihan session in Los Angeles)

  • “Thank you very much for the very interesting pitching session with Andrea at the Popkomm. I would be very keen to take part [in NARIP’s London Supervisor Sessions].” – Christoph Becker, Moanin’ Records (attended Andrea von Foerster’s session in Berlin)

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “Great event with PJ Bloom! Definitely an uncommon opportunity.” and feedback to the Todd Porter San Francisco session: “What a super event last night! Thanks for providing such a unique and excellent opportunity. Where else could I sit down with a top-notch professional like Todd Porter and get immediate feedback on my work? He was very candid and informative, willing to illustrate the ins and outs of the ad business with brilliant clarity. And the chance that he might be able to utilize my music? Invaluable! I’ll be back!” – Joel Evans, Cinemasters (attended PJ Bloom and Todd Porter sessions in San Francisco, and Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Thank you once again for a fantastic series of supervisor sessions. Looking forward to many more sessions and events with NARIP… Thank you all for your professionalism, earnestness and care in providing the very best for us. We SO appreciate everything you do. [NARIP provides] incredible value.”” – Ben Bidlack, Bees & Honey Music (attended all seven sessions in Los Angeles and PJ Bloom session in San Francisco

  • “It was really great. Will attend the [sessions] in October. Jessica was really lovely and everyone was so talented.” – Sarah Nagourney, Glassbeat Music (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “Thank you and the NARIP staff for the supervisor session with Jessica… This was a ‘crash course’ in what an advertising music supervisor needs versus a music cues written for TV shows (which is what I was familiar with)…. I already signed up for the next session on the 27th.” – Classical arranger / composer / producer Sor Harris (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “I found the session extremely interesting/helpful, and I look forward to attending the rest of the series.” – Jacob Weinrib, Parma Licensing (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Ryan was an awesome guest who genuinely appreciated the music we had to offer and gave us spot-on, thoughtful comments with which to build upon. I can see why he was voted a top music supervisor in last year’s NARIP poll! We all went out with Ed [Razzano – program moderator] afterwards (including Ryan) to cap off a great 6-session series [in New York]. I know I speak for all of us, especially the ones like me who attended all of the sessions, when I say that we’re sad that they are ending. – Annie Calder, Coral West Music (attended Chris Mollere’s session in Los Angeles, and 6-part series in New York including sessions with Jessica Dierauer, Jane Scofield, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “I really enjoyed the event and definitely see the value in the intimacy of it. I’m on board for more as well as doing some LA stuff and London… thanks again for putting together such effective events.” – Freddy Charles, Freddy Charles Music (attended 6-part series in New York including sessions with Jessica Dierauer, Jane Scofield, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session in Los Angeles)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “What a wonderful job NARIP is doing in putting together these events that help professionals connect and share information. Kudos to NARIP and your wonderful team.” – Daniel Indart, Latin Music Specialists (attended Chris Mollere and Julianne Jordan sessions in Los Angeles)
