BACKGROUND

On the heels of NARIP’s successful Music Supervisor Sessions – intimate meetings with the best music supervisors in the business today – NARIP is proud to introduce its Radio Executive Sessions in the same mold.

Through NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions, NARIP members have made placements in significant projects, including most recently Peter Kimmel who has placed songs from his catalog in True Blood (“Soul of a Man Never Dies”) and in Dexter (“Jhaira”) following our session with Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles – read more about these exciting placements here.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) radio executives at the top-rated stations in town.

LIMITED ENROLLMENT OF ONLY 15 PEOPLE PER SESSION

Limited to 15 people per session, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the executives and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. Participants will be able to pitch music on the spot and receive instant feedback as to whether a song is appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, radio air time – possible. Please note: NARIP cannot guarantee that any participants’ music will receive airtime.

Above all, attendees get to meet key players in the modern radio business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At each NARIP Radio Executive Session in Los Angeles, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music and get immediate, direct feedback from one radio executive.

Here is what attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions (the same format as the upcoming Radio Executive Sessions) held earlier this year in Los Angeles:

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions)

ABOUT THE RADIO EXECUTIVES

Julie Pilat, Assistant Program Director / Music Director at KIIS FM and Program Director at KYSR 98-7fm
Session #1 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011

A young Julie Pilat, obsessed with Hip Hop, Pop AND Rock, started her radio career while still in junior high. A Seattle native, she began answering phones at KUBE in 1992, and by the time she hit high school, Julie had her own ON AIR shift at the local college radio stations KGRG and KNHC. As soon as she was able to drive herself to the station, she got her own air shift at KUBE as well. Julie’s college years took her to Arizona (ASU) where she continued to foster her radio career and passion for music at KPWR (Hip Hop) and KEDJ (Alternative Rock) in Phoenix, where she held down air shifts and worked in the programming departments. In 1998, she returned to Seattle and landed the midday air shift and the APD/MD job at KUBE. Four years later, Julie made the move to Los Angeles and was named the APD/MD at legendary Top 40 KIIS FM. The success of KIIS during her tenure there, coupled with an unbridled passion for manic genres made her the stand out choice to take over the helm at Clear Channel’s KYSR when the format switched to Alternative Rock in January of 2009. Today, Julie continues to hold both positions in the Clear Channel LA Radio Cluster (APD/MD at KIIS FM and PD at KYSR 98-7fm). In her “spare” time, Julie is a dedicated mentor and community leader. She donates time and resources to A Place Called Home in South Central and to the Youth Mentoring Connection. She is also passionate about discovering new music, mentoring new artists, and being creative with how radio can support the artist development process in the ever-changing music business.

Julie’s Awards, Honors and Acknowledgements include:

  • R&R’s Top 40 Music Director of the Year for several years.
  • Youth Mentoring Connection “Mentoring Hall of Fame” 2007
  • FMQB CHR Music Director of the Year 2009
  • Radio Ink’s Top 50 Most Influential Women in Radio 2010 and 2011
  • S.I.N. Network’s Music Director of the Year for several years

2012-06-12 In LA – NARIP Presents Film Makers Who Seek Music
×

NARIP Presents

Film Makers Who Seek Music

on Tuesday, June 12, 2012

at SAE Institute of Technology in Los Angeles

Placing music in film and TV is competitive, and any advantage is a plus.

Give yourself the advantage of meeting directors face-to-face who need music (songs and score) for their film projects.

NARIP has long been a proponent of “meet the talent early” – whether artistic or executive talent – to get in at the ground floor. An excellent example of this is film maker Steven Spielberg and composer / conductor / pianist John Williams. Between the two of them, Spielberg and Williams have won more awards than you can count. Williams has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures (Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones films, E.T. the Estra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and the first three Harry Potter films), and has composed music for all but two of Spielberg’s major feature films. Their collaboration dates back to when they were both unknown and just starting out. They recognized each other’s talents earl, worked well together and voila! Together they have made and scored some of the biggest blockbusters in the world.

These are the kinds of professional relationships NARIP seeks to enable with our programs and activities. So come get to know the buyers – the film makers themselves – and let them get to know you, your catalog and the artists you represent!

At this program we will discuss what the film makers seek and how to market music to make it more attractive to them. Different deal types will also be discussed for licensing music in film.

You will receive copies of important documents, learn how to close and “paper” these deals and keep music buyers coming back for more.

Meet the buyers and get educated about the art of music placement in film!

You will learn:

  • Making the pitch: necessary elements
  • What music buyers such as film directors really look for
  • How to increase the impact and marketability of music
Also:

  • What to do before seeking a placement
  • You’ve made a placement, now what?
  • Important deal points and legal documents required
  • Explanation of standard deal points
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Types of deals
  • Types of music uses
  • Things to avoid
  • Negotiation
  • Hiring a lawyer: pros and cons
  • Closing the deal
  • Typical flow of earnings from a film, TV, trailer or ad placement
  • How to get paid
Sample license agreement, quote sheet and cue sheet will be distributed at event.

Don’t miss this insider’s peek at the music placement realities of the fastest-changing business in the world. Most importantly, this program gives you practical information you can apply immediately to work with music buyers and land placements NOW.

THANK YOU

Special thanks for her help with this program to Jessica Ramos at SAE Institute.

All are welcome. You need not be a NARIP member to attend.

2014-11-19 In LA – NARIP Music Supervisor Session -w- Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm (Gravity, Frozen, Godzilla)

NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session With
Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm

on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Note this session starts at 7:30 p.m.

Jump to registration below, click here.

DETAILS

Bobby Gumm is our special guest at this NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Trailers – which represents a large part of Gumm’s client work – have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

ABOUT BOBBY GUMM

Bobby Gumm is a Vice President at Trailer Park, one of the largest and most prolific ad agencies in the world, where he oversees all things music. With almost a decade of music supervision experience Gumm has supervised hundreds of trailers/campaigns and has spoken internationally on the subject. Some of his more recent highlights include trailers for Interstellar, Horrible Bosses 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, Gravity, Frozen, Godzilla, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3.

Also, Bobby placed music from one NARIP session participant in a trailer for the Warner Bros. Film Grudge Match starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone.

Come meet this career-maker.

Recent campaigns include Transformers, American Hustle, Wolf of Wall Street, Taken 3, The Gambler, Anchorman, Edge Of Tomorrow & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In his off hours he enjoys drawing, hanging out with friends and going to the movies.

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions

Intimate Meetings & Pitch Sessions With Top Music Supervisors

Session #5 with Andrea von Foerster
on Thursday, June 2, 2011

at SAE Institute of Technology in Los Angeles

DETAILS

What do P.J. Bloom, Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar, Julianne Jordan, Andrea von Foerster and John Houlihan have in common? They are all special guests at NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions launching April 7, 2011 at SAE Institute in Hollywood, CA.

Representing the best and brightest in music supervision, these six seasoned executives select and place music in blockbuster films and hit television shows, and in NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Placement is the new radio. Come meet these career-makers.

BACKGROUND

NARIP President Tess Taylor is regularly retained by a private European music organization to secure meetings with top music supervisors in Los Angeles for its members. Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who represent catalogues and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) music supervisors in town.

Limited to 15 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable music supervisors to get to know you. At private sessions in 2010, Alicen Schneider needed a theme song for a game show (Minute To Win It) and Gary Calamar needed a title song for an MTV series. At another session, Carolyn Richardson needed a theme song for a television project. Participants were able to pitch for these opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit the supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MET key players in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At each session, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities and get immediate feedback from one music supervisor.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Julianne Jordan

Julianne Jordan started her music supervision career with a bang when director Doug Liman brought her to a little independent movie called Swingers. The film ignited the “swing” craze in the 90s, spawned a new type of vernacular, and pushed the interest in retro swing music into hyper drive. The soundtrack went gold and Julianne has not stopped working since. Julianne has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with Doug Liman on all of the films he directed, including Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and most recently Fair Game. Julianne has also supervised such hit films as The Italian Job, Valentine’s Day, Red and Yogi Bear. Julianne’s latest movie is the CGI animated Hop for Universal. She is currently at work on her second Garry Marshall collaboration, New Year’s Eve. In 2007, Julianne supervised the blockbuster family film Alvin and the Chipmunks, where she lent her expertise in helping create an entirely new soundtrack with songs featuring that world-recognized chipmunk sound. Alvin and the Chipmunks is a certified platinum soundtrack. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which she also supervised, is well on its way to platinum status as well. Julianne is currently serving on the board of governors of the NARAS LA Chapter. She also had the distinction of winning the first Music Supervisor of The Year Award given by the Guild of Music Supervisors in 2011. No stranger to performing, Julianne is an accomplished violist who studied her craft at Skidmore College.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Gary Calamar, Go Music Services

Gary Calamar, president of Go Music, is a Grammy-nominated producer and music supervisor for his work on HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” He is currently overseeing the music on some of the most acclaimed and popular shows on television: “True Blood” (HBO), “House” (Fox), and “Dexter” (Showtime). Gary has also chosen the songs for the films “Varsity Blues,” for which he received a gold record, “Slums Of Beverly Hills” and the forthcoming release “I Love You Philip Morris”. Gary hosts a hit radio show every Sunday night on public radio powerhouse KCRW in Santa Monica. Gary’s unique brand of “adventurous pop music both timely and timeless” has been a favorite of listeners for over a decade. Gary’s book, Record Store Days (with Phil Gallo) about the rise and fall of The Record Store will be released on Record Store Day, April 2010 from Sterling Publishing. The first light young Mr. Calamar saw was on a Westinghouse Capri TV set. He was vaccinated with a phonograph needle. Born in the shadows of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx NY, Gary first found his passions lit when his parents took him to see “West Side Story”. By the time “A Hard Days Night” and “Goldfinger” came out he was hooked on the explosive combination of Movies and Music. He traveled west in the early 80’s landing in Los Angeles. In need of a job that would ensure him a steady flow of promotional records and free concert tickets, Gary stepped behind a cash register and worked retail. He was managing a Licorice Pizza Record store as 12 inch vinyl records turned into 5 inch digital discs and later moved on to Rhino Records mixing with the customers and building up his music collection. In the mid 90’s Gary started as a volunteer at National Public Radio’s influential powerhouse KCRW. After (literally) getting down on his knees and begging music director Chris Douridas for a radio show he was given a shot. Gary’s unique brand of “adventurous pop music both timely and timeless” proved to be a hit. His show “The Open Road” currently airs Sunday nights from 9-Midnight. Through the years Gary has hosted live performances and interviews with musical greats ranging from Brian Wilson and Elmer Bernstein to Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and The Flaming Lips. In 1998 Gary broke into the Music Supervision game and tackled the movie “Varsity Blues”, resulting in a #1 box office hit and a soundtrack album certified gold. At the turn of the century Gary, along with friend and fellow music supervisor Thomas Golubic´ oversaw the music for the HBO original series “Six Feet Under” and were nominated for Grammy Awards for producing both volumes of the ‘Six Feet Under’ soundtracks. He lives in a lovely home in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon with his lovely wife and their amazing daughter.

BACKGROUND Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured almost 2,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and major studio trailers for NARIP members.   Since inception of NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions in 2018, 17 NARIP members have signed representation or music publishing deals as a direct result.  Other outcomes include collaborations, co-writing, producing and commissioned work. At NARIP’s Music Supervisor Pitch Session:
  • Meet Freeform (Disney) network executive (music supervisor) face-to-face
  • Pitch songs directly to Matt for his current and priority projects
  • Meet Matt who can say YES and write you a check.
  • Learn how to get placed directly from the buyer, hear what works and what doesn’t
  • Direct access + firsthand info = better results FOR YOU
Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.   At NARIP Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the guest music supervisor, synch agent or producer, and they to get to know you.   Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for placement, representation, collaboration and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR PITCH SESSION PREPARATION IS KEY

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 2,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. Almost 2,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
