Paste Magazine Founder / Editor-in-chief Josh Jackson shares a few great tips. He guests at NARIP’s Meet The Press program next week (Jun 17) in Atlanta.

1. Include links to streaming music or video—not downloads. The people you’re pitching to have very limited time to consider each release. A quick visible link to your best song will give you the best shot at being heard.

2. If you can, use a publicist. If you can’t, include quotes from trusted sources—really anything that points to why a journalist should be paying attention to you.

3. Tell your story (concisely). Editors and writers are looking for stories and good ones will stand out, even before they’ve heard the music.

4. Know who you’re pitching. Honest flattery doesn’t hurt—if you’re a fan of the publication, let them know and they’ll assume that your style of music is more likely a fit.

5. Don’t bother with any of this until you have a good live show. The best way to get press is to get better and build a fanbase organically until no one can ignore you anymore.
